It is estimated that a quarter of the people living with HIV in the USA have not been tested and are unaware that they are infected. It is also believed that most new HIV infections are from those unaware of their infection and continue to infect others. The Centers for Disease Control [CDC] continues in its efforts to get everyone possible tested and its guidelines to doctors and other providers strongly recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV as a routine part of their medical care and that anyone engaging in high-risk behaviors be tested annually. When California residents find out they are HIV positive, very low cost [or free] medical care and HIV drugs are available to almost everyone.
In August 2008 the CDC revised its estimate of new HIV infections from a longstanding 40,000 yearly to 56,300 per year; an increase of 40%! The revised estimate is based on a new CDC- developed testing method that differentiates between infections acquired within the previous five months and older infections.
